Portrait Sculpture

Portrait sculpture has a long and enduring tradition in art, capturing not only the physical likeness of a person but also their character, presence and story. Irish sculptor Marie Smith creates contemporary portrait sculpture that continues this tradition through careful observation, sensitivity to form and a deep understanding of human anatomy. Working directly from life, her portraits aim to convey the individuality and personality of the sitter while retaining the expressive qualities of her modelling style.

Portrait sculpture begins with an original model made in clay. Through a series of sittings and studies, the form gradually develops as the sculptor observes the structure of the head, the subtle movement of features and the unique expression of the sitter. From this original clay model, the sculpture may be cast in bronze, fired as ceramic or produced in Jesmonite, depending on the scale, setting and preference of the client. These materials allow the finished sculpture to have both permanence and a rich tactile surface that reflects the process. Portrait sculptures may be created as busts, head studies or full figures, suitable for private collections, commemorative works or public art commissions.

Marie Smith’s portrait sculpture has received recognition in major national and international exhibitions. Her portraits were shortlisted for the Zurich Portrait Prize at The National Gallery of Ireland in 2022 and in 2023 when her ceramic portrait Armand received the Highly Commended Award. Portrait sculptures were selected for the Society of Portrait Sculptors’ FACE exhibitions, in 2020 a full figure portrait os Soraya was Commended for the Artist’s Collecting Prize. One of her notable portrait sculptures is Bobby Coote – The Man Who Wanted to Fly, a portrait celebrating the well-known Cavan figure and local legend whose story has become a symbol of determination and the belief in never giving up on your dreams.

Marie Smith welcomes portrait sculpture commissions and works closely with individuals, families, organisations and institutions to create meaningful and lasting artworks. Commissioning a portrait sculpture offers a unique opportunity to celebrate a person’s life, achievements or legacy through the timeless language of sculpture. Each commissioned portrait is carefully developed from initial consultation through modelling and casting, resulting in a sculpture that is both personal and enduring.
