Cavan Arts Development Award 2022
The ICA Crosserlough, Co. Cavan worked with Marie Smith in Spring 2022 making ceramic butter / cheese dishes.

Objectives of the project:

  • To bring the arts to rural communities
  • To be creative and learn new skills in a supportive group
  • To provide a safe space to help overcome any social anxieties caused by COVID 19
  • To celebrate the traditions of the ICA

Each participant started the project with an identical clay dome. They had to decide on a theme for their unique butter / cheese dish. The clay was modelled and elements added. Bases were made to complete the set.

The clay was firstly bisque fired to 1000 degrees. Coloured underglazes were painted onto the pieces and then they were covered with a transparent glaze to give a glossy finish. They were fired again to ceramic stoneware temperature of 1220 degrees.

These dishes and bases are functional and will take pride of place in homes in the Crosserlough area.
