Marie Smith - Artist's bio

Marie Smith is a contemporary Irish sculptor whose work focuses on figurative and portrait sculpture. She graduated from Carmarthenshire College of Technology & Art in 1995 with a Higher National Diploma in Sculpture. That summer she began work at AB Fine Art Foundry in London, training as a mould-maker and wax worker. During this time she gained extensive technical knowledge working alongside skilled artisans on bronze artworks by some of the United Kingdom’s leading sculptors, developing a strong understanding of traditional foundry processes and bronze casting.

In 1998 Smith returned to Ireland to work as sculpture studio assistant to the renowned sculptor Barry Flanagan in Castleknock, Dublin. For several years she worked as a freelance mould-maker for Dublin bronze casting foundries as well as collaborating with individual artists across Ireland. During this period she undertook large-scale mould-making projects for public artworks at The Sculpture Factory in Cork and Leitrim Sculpture Centre. Her experience also included restoration work and projects in film and theatre, further expanding her knowledge of materials, casting and sculptural production.

In 2010 Smith moved to Montmartre in Paris where she discovered her passion for making figurative sculpture working directly from the life model. While living in Paris she studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Atelier Legendre and Atelier Saint-Fargeau, and spent many hours drawing in the French Sculpture Rooms at the Louvre. She returned to Ireland in 2015 and established her sculpture studio in County Cavan. Smith creates figurative sculpture in bronze, ceramic and Jesmonite and continues to work regularly from life, attending life drawing sessions at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin and life modelling sessions at Atelier Saint-Fargeau in Paris. Alongside her studio practice she undertakes sculpture commissions including portrait sculpture and public art commissions.
