Marie Smith - Artist's bio
I graduated from Carmarthenshire College of Technology & Art in 1995 with a HND in sculpture. That summer, I started work at AB Fine Art Foundry in London where I trained as a mould-maker and wax worker. I gained a wealth of knowledge here working with experienced artisans on bronze artworks by some of the UK's leading sculptors.
In 1998, I returned to Ireland to work as Barry Flanagan's sculpture studio assistant in Castleknock, Dublin.
For several years I worked as a freelance mould-maker for the Dublin bronze casting foundries as well as individual artists around Ireland undertaking large scale mould-making projects for public artworks at The Sculpture Factory, Cork and Leitrim Sculpture Centre. I also worked on several restoration, film and theatre projects.
In 2010, I moved to Montmartre, Paris and it was here that I discovered my passion for making figurative sculpture working directly with the life model.
During my time in Paris, I studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Atelier Legendre, Atelier Saint-Fargeau as well as spending countless hours drawing at the Louvre.
I returned to Ireland in 2015 and set up my sculpture studio in County Cavan.
I make figurative sculpture working in bronze, ceramic and Jesmonite. I regularly attend life drawing sessions at the RHA, Dublin and life modelling sessions at Atelier Saint Fargeau, Paris. I facilitate workshops with Cavan Monaghan Arts & Health Forum and Cavan County Council Arts Office. I am registered as a TAP and BLAST artist/facilitator for residencies in Arts and Education.
